On 6A silk
The grade, and the weight. Everything else is copy.
Grade
Raw silk is graded on the filament: its length, evenness and lustre. 6A is the top. It costs more because fewer cocoons qualify, and it is the reason the cloth keeps its sheen after fifty washes.
Momme
The weight of the cloth — the one figure that cannot be dressed up. Below 16, silk is thin and wears through. We start at 19 momme for the body, 22 for the bed, and 25 for the heaviest bedding.
Why it matters on skin
Silk is protein, like hair. It does not drink moisture from the skin the way cotton does, and it does not drag on the hair while you turn over.
